English: A Cornish Mining Walk (Unity Wood)
589938 : Previous -- (29 of 34) -- Next : 590249 This photograph is taken from a footpath (part of the Wheal Busy Loop) very close to the north edge of the wood. There are two pit shafts quite close to each other here. The second is behind and right of the viewpoint. Both shafts are safe to approach have large scale grid work about them. The 590245 behind the viewpoint has iron rungs built into a concrete lined wall and is clearly used as a modern day entry into the underground workings. The 590247 ahead can be seen cut through the original rock. The route of the walk continues ahead. Unity Wood is an important ancient woodland and mining landscape dating back to medieval tin working. --- Although there is an easy, safe footpath through Unity Wood, you should not leave the path except where marked. The wood is private and there are a great many old mine workings whose safety should not be relied upon. Wheal is Cornish for Mine and this circular walk visits a number of mine ruins in the area between Chacewater and Scorrier. Building, chimneys and pits belonging to Wheal Busy, Unity Wood and Killifreth Engine House amongst others are visited. Some of the walking is on minor roads and there is one major road to cross, so please take care. --- To go to the photograph for the start of the walk, click here 588484. |
