Title
AXE
Description
English: A copper alloy blade fragment from the end of a small socketed axe or possibly a chisel. This fragment measures 23.9mm in length and 33.3mm in width and is 13.5mm thick. The break demonstrates that one face was very thin (1.2mm) compared to the other (3.9mm). However, flanging on the top of the sides resulting from hammer sharpening the blade, shows the axe to have been finished for use prior to breakage. The edge of the blade is lost to corrosion there is also extensive pocking on the outer, though not inner, faces. The fragment has a dark green patina except for the area of pale green corrosive products. This fragment was found associated with a sword fragment which implies that these two objects were originally part of a hoard. It is late Bronze Age in date, probably late Bronze Age 3 (after O'Connor 1980)/ (Ewart park) date.
