Title
AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Description
English:

A perhaps Lower Palaeolithic (500, 000 - 150,000 BC) stone probable core tool, perhaps an axehead roughout or possibly a flake. It is made perhaps of Devon limestone with possible calcite bands running through (Mike Trevarthen pers. comm. Dec. 2019). The material is dark grey in colour and 'soft' to the touch. The object is ovate in shape and plano-convex in cross-section with several transverse ridges to the flatter (ventral if struck) face. The bulb of percussion isn't obvious and if struck, it could be at either end, both of which are slightly raised and one of which is additionally damaged. The convex (dorsal if struck) face has short, scaled, abrupt and semi-abrupt flake removals particularly along one edge. Damage at the wider convex end shows the material formed in layers. Irregular short, scaled, low angle flake removals to the long edges of the flatter face are probable damage.
The object measures 106.1mm in length, 84.9mm in max.width, 23.8mm in max.thickness and weighs 242g (to the nearest 2g). The dimensions of the two shorter ends are c.39x11mm and c.77x23mm.
