English: Avranches is a French commune located in Normandy, not far from Mont-Saint-Michel.
After the collapse of the Saint-André cathedral in 1794, the Notre-Dame church was too small to accommodate parishioners. Also, around 1855, it was decided to build a new building. It is a neo-Gothic building in Saint James stone, with a facade of two towers capped with spiers. But the construction, which was difficult to finance, dragged on: the work was not finally completed until 1927, without the completion of the arrows and the choir. Imaginative sculptors embellished it with fantastic gargoyles, various animals and picturesque figures. |
