Apollo 16 Hasselblad image from film magazine 120/V - Lunar orbit. This photo is used in Figure 4-44 of the Apollo 16 Preliminary Science Report (NASA SP-315), which has the following caption: Oblique view southeastward along the southwestern rim of the Crater Alphonsus. Smooth terrain at the right side of the frame is the eastern Sea of Clouds. Deep shadows at the top of the photograph are in the Crater Alpetragius. The dark-halo-crater area on the western floor of Alphonsus, considered as a candidate site during the selection of the landing sites for the Apollo 16 and 17 missions, is at the lower left corner of the photograph. The albedo contrast between the normal Alphonsus floor and dark-halo material is not striking at this viewing angle and low Sun elevation. The dark-halo material is approximately 100 km south of the groundtrack as this photograph was exposed. Note the large pockets of flat terrain similar to the Alphonsus floor that are perched at intermediate levels up the terraced western wall of Alphonsus. |
