Apollo 16 Hasselblad image from film magazine 113/A - Orbit & Post-Ldg. This photo is used in Figure 4-15 of the Apollo 16 Preliminary Science Report (NASA SP-315), which has the following caption: The mortar box assembly (MBA, in the foreground) is part of the active seismic experiment. The MBA contains four grenades that are designed to be fired remotely by ground control. The grenades, which explode on contact with the lunar surface, provide a calibrated seismic-signal source to the geophone line. The geophone line, which extends some 94 m out from the central station, can be seen in the upper center and upper right in this photograph. (Energy from the explosions is used to produce a seismogram, a record of energy propagation through the crust o f the Moon. Seismograms provide scientists with information about the internal structure o f the Moon.) The golden, rectangular object at the upper left is the ALSEP central station; the gray, finned object is the radioisotope thermoelectric generator; the three-armed, white-and-gold object is the lunar-surface magnetometer. |
