Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Color image from lunar orbit. Largest crater is Beaumont L, with dark halo. Most of the scene is part of Mare Nectaris covered by ejecta from Theophilus.
Part of this photo was used in Figure 18-13 of the Apollo 14 Preliminary Science Report (SP-272), which has the following caption:
Beaumont L Crater (4-km diameter) with dark halo and interior. The arrow points to the color anomaly in walls (north approximately toward right).

The text of the Report refers to the figure as follows:

Another, but less distinctive, color anomaly is evident in the young, small, 4-km, dark-halo Beaumont L Crater (fig. 18-13). The crater walls exhibit horizontal, wavy, locally discontinuous, alternating dark and rusty-colored bands, and the crater floor has a brownish hue. The implications of this color anomaly are even less clear than those of the anomaly previously described. The rusty appearance of the crater interior may be attributed to its apparent youth, if the experiments discussed in reference 18-14 are applicable. More recently formed, bright-appearing craters, as measured from telescope data, are the most colorful of lunar features (ref. 18-13).
