Summary

[edit]
Description

Apollo 8 Hasselblad image from film magazine 17/C - Lunar Orbit. This photo was used in Figure 2-16 of the Analysis of Apollo 8 Photography and Visual Observations (SP-201), which has the following caption:

Apollo 8 frame 2681-C, taken at 20° Sun angle and displaying resolution comparable to that of Lunar Orbiter IV photography.

The text of the Analysis refers to the figure as follows:

Low-Sun-angle photography is useful because it makes conspicuous the fine topographic detail both of fresh impact craters and of relatively old and subdued craters. See, for example, the two fresh craters close together near the top of figure 2-16 and the large older crater in the lower center. Details of the central peak, the walls, and the outer rim of the older crater are well displayed in this photograph, which has approximately the Sun angle and resolution of typical Lunar Orbiter IV photographs, but exceeds them in dynamic range (tone values) and is without the distortions introduced by Lunar Orbiter framelets. Photographs of this nature will be of value in relative age determination of lunar craters based on their morphologic characteristics.
