Description Pikes were used in hand to hand combat over the centuries when large groups of soldiers were involved. Some were simple spears but with time they became more elaborate. Their main use was against massed cavalry attacks, the infantry formed into squares with the very long pikes jutting out like porcupine spines. This type of warfare remained in use until shotguns and cannon were profusely used. - MALTA
