Summary

[edit]
Description

French post-war era Heavy tank The ARL 44 was intended to restart the French tank industry following German occupation. For patriotic reasons it was an entirely French design, although that sadly left it with several obsolete features including the suspension, which was effectively the same design as the 1930’s Char B1. Despite this it was an impressive and imposing machine, weighing 50 tonnes and armed with a 90mm gun. An original order for 500 was reduced to 150 when the war ended, but further reductions meant that only sixty were eventually built. Produced from 1949 to 1951, they only served until 1953 when they were replaced by American built M47 Patton medium tanks, also armed with a 90mm gun. Most of the ARL 44s were scrapped and this example is now one of only five known to survive. It has the chassis number ‘FAMH 29’ and is on display in the ‘Contemporary French’ hall.
