sign of the building they proposeto erect; and if they possess a work in which every needed architectural feature, both those of utility and those of ornament, is given, necessary to the completeconstruction of the building, it will not be a difficult task to make the structure agood-proportioned and inviting one. Without such a work, the only alternative is either to engage an architect orto follow in the footsteps of some predecessor, copy his building as far as is practi-cable, and so add one more to the many generations of nondescripts and sceneivdisturbers, which mar our beautiful country everywhere, in localities distant fromour chief cities. That the work will be deemed valuable, when examined, andfound of great service, when used, is the belief of the authors ; and that it may domuch to correct evils at present existing in building operations, and elevate and aidtlie taste of tlujse who build, is their earnest wish. rMMINGS, ILLER. ) M.
