Summary

[edit]
Description

Anzac Day was first commemorated on 25 April in 1916, the first anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. In New Zealand it was gazetted as a half-day holiday. However, the status of Anzac Day was not clear until the early 1920s, when it became established as a National Day of Commemoration for the 60,000 Australians and 18,000 New Zealanders who died during the Great War.

On the day of the first anniversary of the Gallipoli landings (25 April in 1916) a commemorative flagpole made from kauri and Australian hardwood – symbolising ‘the unity of Australian and New Zealand railwaymen in peace and war’ – was unveiled at Petone railway station.

This was the outcome of a suggestion by the railway staff at Hornsby Depot, New South Wales, to exchange flags with a similar railway establishment. The staff of the old Petone Workshops welcomed the scheme, and decided to make the flags for this flagstaff themselves. The Railways Department provided the materials for a second New Zealand ensign to fly alongside the Commonwealth flag received from Australia, and also arranged the making of the flagstaff.

The exchanged flags were unfurled simultaneously in both countries on Anzac Day, 1916. For the Petone part of the proceedings, an enormous crowd was on hand at the Railway Station, with hundred of people journeying from out of town. The large number of attendees included around 1,200 Petone school children holding miniature Union Jacks.

The Petone event also appears to be the first Anzac Day observance in New Zealand attended by members of the government, including the Rt. Hon. W.F. Massey (Prime Minister), who unfurled the Commonwealth flag, and the Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward (Deputy PM), who unfurled the New Zealand flag. A similar event was held in Hornsby, NSW, where the New Zealand flag made by the Petone Workshops Trimmers Department was raised by the daughter of the NSW Governor, Miss Adeline Strickland.

Archives New Zealand holds photographic material and other ephemera relating to the commemoration of Anzac Day transferred from government departments such as New Zealand Railways Corporation and New Zealand Post, along with politicians including Sir Walter Nash. This exhibition contains just a small slice of what we hold of this type of material.
