Title
AMPULLA
Description
English:

A complete or largely complete medieval bag or flask shaped lead ampulla dating to AD1350 - 1530. The bowl is complete with suspension loops either side of the neck, one crushed inwards and so now closed. The top of the ampulla is jagged and has clearly been opened. One side of the top is lower than the other and part may be missing. It is 45.86mm in length, and 31.23mm in width across the bowl. It is sub rectangular in cross section with a slightly raised casting line around its outside edge. The flask has been bent or crushed roughly diagonally across its middle part at some stage. On one side, the lower part of an heraldic shield can be seen, the upper part obscured by the marks of the crushing. On the other side there is a 'W' or two intersecting 'V's below a feature, possibly a crown. See Brian Spencer SSWM Medieval Catalogue Part 2 p89 fig180 which shows a probably identical cipher. He suggests the 'W' may stand for Our Lady of Walsingham.

It weighs 29.67g. It has a light grey and white patina.
