[edit]DescriptionALQ-71 ECM pod at Hill AFB museum.jpg |
A U.S. Air Force AN/ALQ-71 electronic countermeasures pod on display at Hill Air Force Base, Utah (USA). The General Electric AN/ALQ-71 Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) pod was a 1-8 gigahertz noise jammer developed from the earlier QRC-160-1 jamming pod. The pod was carried on aircraft in an attacking group to blind the enemy radars guiding surface-to-air missiles, early warning radars, and ground-control intercept radars. The ECM pod effectively drowned out enemy radar receivers with irrelevant noise or deceived them with false signals. An on-board computer stored a variety of signals in memory, which were transmitted to the enemy radar, mimicking the true echo but gradually becoming stronger until the deception was accepted by the radar's circuitry. The jammer then transmitted confusing or conflicting signals that gave a false impression of distance or direction from the radar. The AN/ALQ-71 pod flew on the A-7, F-4, RF-101, F-105, B-52, B-57, EB-66, and AQM-34 with the U.S. Air Force. (Text: USAF) |
