Summary

[edit]
Description

They build the telescopes and put them through their paces at the Operations Support Facility, which is base camp for ALMA at 2900 m above sea level, ~50 km from the main site. The red antenna in the background was built to test the pointing accuracy and receivers, but it's not strong enough to contaminate real observations.

Most of the contractors, astronomers and engineers involved lived up here on site (thousands of people at one point, now down to hundreds), so as to not put too much strain on the historic town of San Pedro (pop. 4000), where I'm staying. Well, I'm 20 minutes out of town, but it's close enough.
