Flickr Comment PrendosCK5: Its a Australian Iron & Steel Port Kembla Locomotive oztrainz: Australian Iron & Steel locomotive "Iron Duke" (key identifying factor is outside framed bogies), built by Clyde Engineering in 1919 as NSWGR 242. Worked Cadia iron Duke Quarry until 1928, Sold to Australian Iron & Steel in 1928? when it was transferred to AI&S Lithgow the AI&S Port Kembla by August 1928. Noted in use on ore haulage from jetty and coke haulage from Wongawilli and later at steelworks coke ovens. Withdrawn and scrapped 1957. Ref Gazetteer of Industrial Steam Locomotives - Illawarra District by K McCarthy ARHS 1983 oztrainz: Based on the orientation of the range in the background, the location of this photo may be on the line between Unanderra station and the steelworks where the Mount Kembla line joins, approximately where the current freeway crosses this line. This is most likely a coke transfer trip from Wongawilli to the steelworks, if so this would date the photo prior to 1945 when the Wongawilli coke ovens were closed and demolished. See ro.uow.edu.au/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2238&contex... - talk given to Illawarra Historical Society by Don Reynolds on the history of cokemaking in the Illawarra.
