Description View of the aft flight deck of the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea (CVS-47), in 1958. The deck is packed with U.S. Marine Corps Douglas AD-6 Skyraiders from Marine Attack Squadron 331 (VMA-331) "Bumblebees". Also visible in the foreground are Sikorsky HRS of Marine Helicopter Transport Squadron 163 (HMR-163) "Ridge Runners" and two Grumman TF-1 Trader from Transport Squadron 21 "Pineapple Airlines".
The carrier offloaded half of its complement of Anti-Submarine Squadron 21 (VS-21) "Lighting Bolts" and Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 6 (HS-6) "Indians" at the U.S. Naval Station Subic Bay, Philippines. She then embarked 22 Skyraiders of VMA-331 and the Sikorsky HRS of HMR-163, together with a company of U.S. Marines, for exercises in the South China Sea. Philippine Sea was deployed to the Western Pacific from 13 January to 15 July 1958.
