Description
English: Portland Canal just above McAlpine Locks.

"Robert Greene" starting to shove into 1200-foot lock. The bascule bridge (specifically a rolling lift bridge) over the upper end of the lock has been raised to allow the boat to enter.

This is a good example of the "Alco salute". Alco diesels often emit a cloud of black smoke when the throttle is opened from idle, apparently due to turbo lag.

"Cliff Webster" faced up to barge full of rubble from lock demolition.. . Twin screw towboat "Cliff Webster" (doc. # 606551, length 60 feet, breadth 22 feet, GM 12V-71 diesels [?], 800 hp.). Built in 1979 by Louis G. Ortis Boat Co., Krotz Springs, Louisiana. Originally named "Mike Duffy", owned by M & S Towing, Inc., Cut Off, Louisiana. In 1986, sold to Greater Cincinnati Marine Service, Inc., Newport, Kentucky, and renamed "Cliff Webster". In 2011, firm merged into C & B Marine LLC, Covington, Kentucky, and boat was renamed "Griffin C". Still operating in 2018. . Twin screw towboat "Robert Greene" (doc. # 619977, length 145 feet, breadth 48 feet, Alco 16-251F diesels, 6200 hp). Built 1980 by Jeffboat, Inc., Jeffersonville, Indiana. Owned by American Commercial Barge Line, Jeffersonville. The boat is named for Robert W. Greene III, president of Jeffboat from 1980 to 2001. Still operating in 2018. . Ohio River mile 607.
