Description

Portland Canal at L&I Bridge. Stern of "Gilda Shurden" upbound after passing under raised lift span. ( Is that the Chief taking a break? ) . Twin screw towboat "Gilda Shurden" (doc. # 253863, length 145 feet, width 28 feet, Caterpillar D399 diesels [repowered in 1973], 2250 HP). Built 1947 by Hillman Barge & Construction Co., Brownsville, Pennsylvania. Originally "La Belle", owned by Wheeling (West Virginia) Steel Corp. Sold 1967 to Ohio River Co. and renamed "Wharton". Sold 1968 to Cin-Tow, Cincinnati, Ohio, and renamed "Mike Murphy". Sold 1973 to Magnolia Marine Transport Co., Vicksburg, Mississippi, and renamed "Gilda Shurden".
