Summary

[edit]
Description

A U.S. Navy Douglas A-4B Skyhawk (BuNo 144938) from Attack Squadron 113 (VA-113) "Stingers" Det.Q in flight. VA-113 Det.Q was assigned to Carrier Anti-Submarine Air Group 59 (CVSG-59) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bennington (CVS-20) for a deployment to the Western Pacific and Vietnam from 22 March to 7 October 1965. Note that the detachment kept the tail code "NH" of its parent Attack Carrier Air Wing 11 (CVW-11) and did not adopt the "NT" tail code of CVSG-59. Also not the unusual use of Roman modex numbers.

During this cruise, the A-4B 144938 crashed into the Gulf of Tonkin on 21 May 1965 during a landing approach to the USS Bennington. The pilot was rescued.
