Description
English: Looking WNW from 27th St. Bridge at McAlpine Locks.

Corps of Engineers floating crane "Brown" lifting wooden dam wickets (probably Chanoine wickets), stacked atop a section of lock gate, from floor of 360-foot lock where they have been stored to keep them wet. They will be taken to Dam 52, near Paducah.

So far as I know, dams 52 and 53 still (as of Jan. 2012) have Chanoine navigable passes as well as Bebout weir and "bear traps." See a diagram of various types of movable dam.

Before the construction of the current McAlpine Dam (1961-1964), the previous dam here at the Falls of the Ohio had a Chanoine navigable pass. See a 1934 chart of Locks and Dam 41.
