Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Looking N from 27th St. at Marine St.

Swing span is being opened to allow a Corps of Engineers boat to enter the decommissioned 360-foot lock. This span, built in 1926, was originally a combined roadway and railroad bridge. The railroad tracks were needed to carry equipment to the construction site of LG&E's hydroelectric plant between Shippingport and Rock Island at the lower end of the Kentucky chute of the Falls of the Ohio (see Leland R. Johnson and Charles E. Parrish, [1], pp. 220, 223). This span and the bascule bridge over the 1200-foot main lock were replaced by the Portland-Shippingport Bridge (completed ca. 2008).

For the location of the Kentucky Chute, see a 1876 map of the Portland area.

At left is the mailbox for the steamer "Belle of Louisville" when at her winter berth near the Corps of Engineers repair station. In recent years (as of Jan. 2012), the Belle has stayed at the wharf between 3rd and 4th Sts. throughout the year.
