Title
968 Book clasp.jpg
Description
English: Copper alloy book clasp 33mm long, 11mm wide >1mm thick, this example is rectangular in plan, with an expanded attachment end. There is a ring and dot motif off centre with a hole in the middle, there are reradiating lines emanate from the ring and dot. The forward edge is expanded with a small hook on the terminal. There are two rivet holes both still retaining Fe rivets. The artefact is in a poor condition, suffering heavily from corrosion that has striped away the original surface leaving a dark brown-pitted layer. Artefacts such as this have been discovered in excavations and have been found to predominately date to the 15th and 16th centuries such as the examples discovered in the York excavations (Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, 2937-2939).
