963 Early Medieval buckle plate, view 2.jpg |

Description |
English: Early medieval buckle plate length 30mm, width 28mm, thickness 1mm. The artefact is made from folded sheet copper alloy, the top plate is triangular in plan with rounded corners. There are there rivet holes, one in each corner, there is a double line of stamped dots that run around the edge of top plate. From the base projects two arms, these have been bent back on themselves and would have held the buckle with the pin passing between the two arms. At the end of the arms is a rectangular plate with two rivet holes that correspond to the top rivet holes at the base of the triangular plate. About 30% of the surface has gold on the surface where it was gilt, corrosion has stripped the rest of the surface leaving a patchy brown/light green surface.
Sheet copper alloy buckle plates have been used from the late roman period to the end of the Medieval Period, this particular example dates to the 7th to 9th century. |
