Title |
936 Roman figurine, side view 1.jpg |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy figurine, probably representing Apollo. It is a naked man standing, with pectoral and abdominal muscles clearly defined. His arms are hanging down but the handsare missing due to old corroded breaks. The genitals and calves are again well defined and, as with the arms, the legs end in stumps where the feet are missing with old, corroded breaks.
The face does not appear to be bearded, although the front of the chin is heavily corroded. Even though the eyes are encrusted in mud, the detail on the face is very fine. The hair is rather long but is tied back so that bunches run down either side of the hairline, meeting in the centre of the base of the head to form a bun. This hairstyle is seen on coins depicting females such as Faustina Junior, together with some of the female figures of the late Republic and early Empire. Although the figurine is missing any distinguishing features or trappings of any particular god, the most likely candidate is Apollo. Length 75mm, width 42mm, thickness 12mm. |
