Original Image Name: Piciwiki_israel_92631_מלעניאל מצוי_8.jpg Notes: מתוך סדרת נופי צומח פרחים של עוזי פז. דגני חד-שנתי, עדין, גובהו 30-10 ס"מ, גדל בקבוצות צפופות, ניכר בתפרחות דמויות-שיבולים ארוכות מלענים. פורח באביב. בית גידולו ערבות ובתה בכל חלקי הארץ והוא נפוץ מאוד ושולט בשטחים נרחבים. למעשה, זהו אחד הצמחים הנפוצים ביותר בישראל. למלענים הארוכים תפקיד חשוב בהכוונת הזרעים אל הקרקע, שכן הם מסתלסלים, מתכווצים ונרפים, בהתאם לכמות הלחות שהם סופגים, והתנועה הסלילנית קודחת את הגרגיר באדמה. בעבר נקרא הצמח בשם "שיבולת השטן".
