Notes: קַסְטֶל היא גבעה ואתר לאומי סמוך לכביש מתל אביב לירושלים. עד 1948 שכן על הגבעה יישוב ערבי אל-קסטל עם שליטה מוחלטת על הכביש לירושלים. הכביש נסלל על תוואי דרך עתיק מהתקופה הרומאית. קסטל = מצודה. במלחמת העצמאות שימש המשלט נקודת שליטה על הדרך מהשפלה לעיר הבירה. קרבות קשים היו במאבק על השליטה במקום והקסטל עבר שלוש פעמים מיד ליד. הייתה על ראש גבעה עמדה ערבית שאיימה לנתק את ירושלים. באפריל 1948, הוחלט לכבוש את הקסטל בכל מחיר. המקום שימש לתצפית ובסיס יציאה לחטיבת הראל במלחמת ששת הימים.
