Summary
[edit]Description91118 , Sutton on Trent.jpg | 91118 fronting an InterCity 225 in debranded GNER livery in the village of Sutton-on-Trent between Newark North Gate and Retford stations on the East Coast Main Line, both in Nottinghamshire. The InterCity 225 is an electric high speed train consisting of a Class 91 electric locomotive, 10 Mark 4 coaches and a Mark 4 Driving Van Trailer. With an absolute maximum speed of 162 mph, the InterCity 225, which was originally designed for speeds of up to 140 mph (225 km/h, hence the name), was the fastest train in Britain from 1990 to 1994. The trains were introduced by InterCity when the network was operated by British Rail, passed to GNER on privatization, and then to National Express East Coast and later East Coast. East Coast uses these trains on services to Edinburgh Waverley, Leeds, Bradford Forster Square, Skipton, Newcastle, Glasgow Central, Newark North Gate and York. Despite being designed for speeds of up to 225 km/h, the trains are limited to 200 km/h (125 mph) in regular service due to a lack of cab signaling on the East Coast Main Line - British trains must feature cab signaling in order to operate at speeds of more than 125 mph because it is not practical to observe lineside signals at any higher speeds. |
