A palm leaf from Vivekachudamani, one of the classics in Advaita Vedanta literature

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This folio leaf is from Vivekachudamani, a text traditionally attributed to Adi Shankara (700 to 750 CE). Some scholars support this attribution, but others dispute it mainly because a few of the views expressed herein are different than Adi Shankara's consistent writings elsewhere. The text is in large part consistent with Adi Shankara's philosophy and teachings on Hinduism.

This leaf is a part of a larger pothi (bound set of books), which consisted of four Advaita Vedanta texts in a large manuscripts bhandara (library) found in a Advaita Hindu monastery in 1922. The manuscript itself was copied from an earlier copy sometime in the 18th-century.

A digital version of this text has been archived by the British Library with the assistance of École française d’Extrême-Orient. The original is preserved in Kerala, at Vadakke Madham Brahmaswam – a Vedic studies center.

This is a photo of a 2-D manuscript artwork originally produced in 18th century of an c. 8th century text. Therefore Wikimedia Commons PD-Art licensing guidelines apply. Any rights I have as a photographer is herewith donated to wikimedia commons under CC0 license.
