Three crane barges (including two floating sheerlegs, one named "Wimpy") in tow of "Stephen Foster" (left), assisted by "Captain Val" (right). Tow is backing around to go downriver through Portland Canal after cranes were used to help raise sunken barge near Shippingport Island. ___________________________. . Single screw towboat "Stephen Foster" (doc. # 255920, length 105 feet, width 28 feet, F-M 38D8 diesel, 1800 hp) was built in 1948 by St. Louis Shipbuilding & Steel Co., St. Louis, Missouri. Originally owned by Butcher-Arthur, Inc., Houston, Texas (firm changed name in 1950 to Commercial Petroleum and Transport Co.). In 1955, the boat was sold to Commercial Transport Corp., Jeffersonville, Indiana. In 1975, the boat was sold to C&N Harbor Services, Greenville, Mississippi. In late 1976, the boat sank and then was raised in 1977 after being sold to Okie Moore Diving & River Contracting, St. Charles, Missouri. ________________________________. . Twin screw towboat "Captain Val" (doc. # 298567, length 52 feet, width 20 feet, GM 12V-71 diesels, 650 hp.) was built in 1965 by Universal Towing Co., E. Carondelet, Illinois. Rebuilt in 1971 by Grafton Boat Co., Grafton, Illinois. Owned by builder until sinking in 1975. Salvaged by present owner after many months under water. Rebuilt in 1976 by present owner, Alton, Illinois. Owned by Okie Moore Diving & River Contracting, St. Charles, Missouri. ___________________________. . Ohio River mile 604. Louisville, Kentucky.
