English: Looking NE from I-64 on-ramp near 10th St.
. Towboat "Frederick B. Wells" (doc. # 602459) downbound approaching Portland Canal. Conrail (later L&I) Bridge and upper gates of McAlpine Dam at upper left. Colgate Clock right of center. Twin screw towboat "Frederick B. Wells" (doc. # 602459, length 140 feet, width 38 feet, GM 16-645E6A diesels, 3800 hp.). Built in 1979 by St. Louis Ship, St. Louis, Missouri. Originally named "Frederick B. Wells" and leased by Peavey Barge Lines, St. Louis. In 1994, leased by Inland River Towing, Greenville, Mississippi. In 1996, leased by Brown Water Towing, St. Louis. In 1999, sold to Magnolia Marine Transport Co., Jackson, Mississippi, and renamed "Amy Frances". Still operating in 2018. . Beyond the boat is a vane dike intended to diminish the outdraft which, when the gates of McAlpine Dam are open to let water pass, runs from near the Kentucky bank toward the open gates. Sometimes this outdraft (current flowing away from the bank) makes it difficult for downbound tows to enter the canal, and the dike deflects some of the outdraft more toward the entrance to the canal. [I wonder how well this actually works.] At right is the cell at the upriver end of the dike, with McAlpine Vane Dike Light and Daymarks on top. . Across the river at right are barges and towboat at the Ashland Oil terminal in Clarksville, Indiana, and white storage tanks at the terminal can be seen at center. . Ohio River mile 605. Louisville, Kentucky. February 1988. file # 88b085. . 35 mm Kodachrome. Plustek OpticFilm 7600i and Silverfast 8. Picture Window 6. JPEG quality 95. |
