Summary

[edit]
Description

Detail of Ohio River navigation chart 85 (2010 edition) showing vane dike at upper end of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisville_and_Portland_Canal" rel="nofollow">Portland Canal</a>, and <a href="http://www.lrl.usace.army.mil/Missions/CivilWorks/Navigation/LocksandDams/McAlpineLocksandDam.aspx" rel="nofollow">McAlpine Locks and Dam</a> with upper and lower gates labelled. Ohio River miles 604-608. Louisville, Kentucky

When the gates of McAlpine Dam are open to let water pass, an outdraft is created which flows from near the Kentucky bank toward the dam. This can make it difficult for downbound tows to enter the canal. The vane dike helps reduce the effect of this current.
