Towboat "Joan W" (doc. # 240458) downbound with tank barges. Twin screw towboat "Joan W" (doc. # 240458, length 100 feet, breadth 26 feet, GM 12-567B diesels, repowered in 1984, 2400 hp) Built in 1941 as a single screw boat by Calumet Ship Yard and Dry Dock Co., Chicago, Illinois It was originally named "Donna Lee" and owned by A.L. Mechling Barge Lines, Joliet, Illinois In early 1956, the boat was struck by lightning on the Cumberland River, burned and sank Carl Vest raised the boat, rebuilt it and converted it to triple screw in 1957 at Greenville, Mississippi Also in 1957, the boat was sold to (or operated by) Victory Towing Co., Greenville, and renamed "Bonnie D" In 1965, the boat was again rebuilt, this time as twin screw, and renamed "Johnny Dan" In 1979, the boat was sold to River Towing, Inc., Greenville, and renamed "Jason" In 1980, the boat was sold to Martin Logicon Energy Co., Pine Bluff, Arkansas In 1981, it was sold again and renamed "Joan W", operated by Apex Towing Co., St. Louis, Missouri In 1992, it was sold to Hill's Enterprises, Inc., Decatur, Alabama, and renamed "Christopher H" In 1995, the boat was sold to Choctaw Transportation Co., Dyersburg, Tennessee, and renamed "Mister Charlie" The boat's documentation expired in 2007 Reminder: To search for information about vessels documented by the U.S. Coast Guard (such as towboats), you can use the NOAA's searchable database or the Coast Guard PSIX vessel search page.
