Title |
87C122. Post medieval coin : réformation of Louis XIV |
||
Description |
English: A coin of Louis XIV of France.
Edward Besly of the National Museum and Gallery of Wales has identified this coin as follows. Louis XIV's coinage suffered a succession of remintings in this period, known as 'réformations' and most of the time, ratther than melting down the coins, they struck the new ones directly on the old. This is therefore a réformation: A 1691 'Quadruple sol aux deux Ls', which has been overstruck c.1702-4 to become a a 'cinq sols aux insignes'. The date of the earlier coin is under the King's bust, which is upside-down in relation to the new design. On the reverse, two crossed sceptres have a crown and three lys in the quarters between them, but you can see traces of the undertype: a larger crown with a monogram formed by two curly Ls. |
