Title
859 Bronze Age Palstave Axe.JPG
Description
English: Cast copper alloy palstave axe length 152mm, width 51mm, thickness 27mm.. The butt is slightly truncated, side flanges begin just after that but and curve up to the apex where it slightly angles down to the backstop. The forward edge begins to widen from the backstop terminating in a crescent shaped blade. There are two decorative recesses on the bladed half after the backstop, this motif is present on the opposite side, but slightly less pronounced. There is an intact semicircular loop that straddles the backstop and the top of the blade. A worn casting seam runs down the entire length of axe, but is barely visible on the loop itself.

The condition of the artefact is very poor, corrosion has attacked the whole of the object removing the entire original surface and leaving a deeply pitted dark green layer, along the blade there are lighter green patches where active bronze disease is attacking the surface.

This is a South western type late Middle Bronze Age palstave axe and dates to 1800-1150BC.
