Description
English: Headstone for Thomas John Clagett Maddox

"Assistant Surgeon U.S.A. / Son of / Thomas and Mary P. Maddox / Born December 12, 1852 / Killed in a Skirmish With / APACHE INDIANS / Near Alma, N.M. / December 19, 1885."

Commissioned Assistant Surgeon in the US Army in 1881, assigned to Dept. of Texas (including what is now New Mexico". A New York Times article dated December 23, 1885 describes the events surrounding Maddox's death. Two officers and 4 troopers died in a surprise attack by Apache guerillas on a 35 man scouting detachment of Troop C, 8th US Cavalry. Maddox died from gunshot wounds to the head and chest. Originally buried in New Mexico, the Maddox family had his remains brought home in 1886.


Dedicated in 1849, this lovely Gothic style Episcopal church is located at Lappans Crossroads south of Hagerstown, Maryland approximately halfway between Williamsport and Boonsboro on Lappans Road. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
