Summary

[edit]
Description 80-G-43652: USS Borie (DD 215) will never fly this Presidential Unit Citation awarded for her gallant action sinking German submarine U 405 on November 1, 1943. Gaping holes in her hull forced other members of her Task Unit to sink her. Resting atop the sub, her guns peppered the U-boat from ranges of 10 to 40 feet. Skippers of various units of the task unit are shown on the flight deck of USS Card (CVE 11) as they inspected the pennant. Shown, left to right: Lieutenant Commander Hinton Ira Smith, USNR, skipper of USS Goff (DD 247); Lieutenant Chas E. Hutchins, USNR, Commanding Officer of the Borie; Lieutenant Commander Howard M. Avery, Co, CV-9 and Lieutenant Commander Nerbert D. Bill of USS Barry (DD 248). Photograph released November 10, 1943. (8/18/2015).
