Description 80-G-41874: Air Attacks on German Submarines, WWII. Crew of a Consolidated PBY “Catalina” which destroyed a German submarine, U 156, in West Indies waters by raking deck with machine gun fire and dropping 4 depth bombs from 100’. The U-boat broke in two with terrific explosion and sank. A life raft was dropped for survivors. Pilot, Lieutenant Junior Grade John E. Dryden, Jr., USNR, describes the sinking. The pilot sighted the submarine 8 miles away, and he went into a 45 degree dive. As the submarine sank smoke and debris cascaded 40 feet into the air. The oil slick spread until it was a quarter of a mile wide and three quarters of a mile long. Photographed May 1943. U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
