Summary

[edit]
Description 80-G-41841: Aleutian Islands Campaign, June 1942 - August 1943. Aerial of Japanese positions on Attu, Aleutian Islands. United States Navy photographers flew over the Japanese position on Attu Island, making pictures at will during the last days of the organized Japanese resistance there. These two pictures were made as the foe was being driven back and into the Chicagof Harbor valley, his last stronghold. The scribble of trenches provided shelter for hard-pressed Japanese forces as the Americans bore down on them, south of Chicagof Harbor valley. The valley in which these installations were located runs south and west. Slope in the foreground rises towards Serana Bay. Photographed May 24, 1943. U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/05/10).
