| Description | 80-CF-8811-3_Box 175: Women’s Reserve of the Navy Celebrates First Anniversary. More than 4,000 WAVEs in Washington, D.C., held a rally at the Sylvan Theater, Washington Monument Grounds, on July 27, as part of the national observance of the anniversary. Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox praised the work of the Women’s Reserve during the last year, announced that the Navy wants 70,000 women in uniform by next summer, and expresses the hope that Congress would amend the law so that WAVES may serve overseas. Lieutenant Commander Mildred H. McAfee, Director of the Women’s Reserve, introduced the Secretary. A musical program was given by the United States Navy Band and the Women’s Reserve Glee Club. Shown: Secretary Knox, seated on the band platform, and Lieutenant Commander McAfee wait to go “on the air.” Miss McAfee’s introduction and the Secretary’s speech were broadcast over a national network, photograph released July 28, 1943.
