Summary

[edit]
Description
English: From the source, Photograph of carved Jain figures at Gwalior, in Madhya Pradesh, taken by an unknown photographer around 1882, part of the Gladstone Collection. The impressive hilltop fortress of Gwalior is perched on a sandstone precipice which rises over 100 metres above the surrounding plains. Near the Urwahi Gate, which constitutes the western entrance to the fort, there are large Jain figures which were carved in the steep side of the valley between the seventh and the 15th centuries. The carved figures in this view are some of a group of 22 standing Jain Tirthankaras or saviours.
