Summary
[edit]Description7th-century Surya Lower Cave Rock fort temple.jpg |
English: The Lower Cave Temple is located near at a short distance from the main entrance to the Rockfort complex, Trichy.
The temple has two sanctums, has mandapa and extensive wall relief carvings. It was likely built after the Rockfort Upper Cave Temple (c. 615 CE), was sponsored by Narasimhavarman I (Mamalla) – the successor of Mahendravarman I. The temple shows a grand entrance, reliefs of the Vedic and Puranic deities. Life-size bas-relief carvings depict Ganesha, Subramanya, Brahma, Surya and Durga. The sanctums feature dwarapalas. The Lower Cave Temple lacks the extensive inscriptions found on the walls of the Upper Cave Temple. The Gavaksha's (kudus) are found inside the mandapa, and they look within the temple. The entrance has pillars and pilasters, feature humorous ganas along the ceiling rim, with one with a teasing monkey face. A comparison of the Upper Cave and this cave shows the rapid pace of architecture advanced and the rock carving skills during the 7th-century. |
