| Description |
English: The Bilnath Mahadev temple, also known as the Bileshwar Shiva temple, is a 7th-century temple located in Bileshwar village northeast of Porbandar, Gujarat. It is the largest surviving Hindu temple from the Maitraka period. Further, it is notable for the innovative explorations of Dravida architectural elements such as octagonal karnakuta (corner spires) that are found in elaborate vimana-harmika in 9th to 12th-century Tamil Hindu temples.
The Bilnath temple has a square plan and a phamsana-style shikhara which incorporates chaitya niches (gavakashas). The original temple included a high jagati (platform), had an extended pradakshinapatha, but lacked a mandapa. The site includes some ruins of Hindu art as well as additions and restorations since the 17th-century. A prominent modern era addition is the upper floor, balconies and walls that nearly surround the original 7th-century temple. |
