Title
783D24 Post-Medieval silver-gilt dress hook
Description
English: A silver gilt dress hook. One of two identical finds (the other is DOR-77FA73) The report by Dr Dora Thornton of the British Museum on the two is as follows: "Two silver-gilt dress-hooks, gilt both front and back. They are of identical form, dimensions and fracture. Each takes the form of an openwork circular ornament radiating three thistle-heads and foliage: seven circular pierced holes at the centre in the form of a flowerhead. On the back plate, behind one of the thistle-heads, soldering indicating former presence of a recurving hook, now lost; similsr solder marks lower down suggest location of a rectangular bar attachment of the kind found on dress hooks commonly reported through the Treasure Act. Not a type previously recorded through the Treasure Act. Approx 1.88 cm diam. In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the Stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections Prehistory and Europe, The British Museum Dimensions: 19.19 mm diam x 2.12 mm thick Weight: 2.34 g
