722 Late EArly Medieval buckle fragment.JPG |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy buckle fragment. The buckle is D-shaped with a triangular cross-section, the strap bar is narrowed and recessed. Only one side remains, this has a moulded beasts head biting onto the strap bar. The beast has large oval eyes and triangular ears, the snout is beak shaped and there is no detail for the mouth. The artefact is in a fair condition with pitting on the surface where corrosion has eaten away at it and has resulted in a patchy light green surface. The style of the animal is reminiscent of the Ringerike and epically the Urnes style. Added to this A similar example was found during excavations at Goltho, Lincolnshire, dating this artefact to 1000-1100. |
