| Description |
English: York Street Synagogue, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. In 1842, the first foundations for the York St Synagogue were laid as the Jewish Community found themselves outgrowing and migrating from their original place of worship in Bridge St. Designed by James Hume, the building was architecturally inspired by Egyptian building styles, and the location was officially consecrated on the 2nd April 1844. The Synagogue served the Jewish community for 35 years, until a community split occurred in 1859 and a new congregation was established in Macquarie St. Sources: |
