Português: No século XV o Castelo de Penedono é apontado como o local de nascimento de D. Álvaro Gonçalves Coutinho, celebrizado por Luís de Camões com a alcunha de "o Magriço". A história em que tomou parte pode considerar-se o paradigma da mentalidade cavaleiresca medieval, em que doze cavaleiros portugueses partiram para Inglaterra para, em torneio, defrontar outros tantos ingleses que haviam injuriado a honra de doze damas da corte dos Lancaster.
O primeiro foral de Penedono data de 1195, atribuido por D. Sancho. O pelourinho actual foi construído nos inícios do século XVI e resulta do novo foral passado a 27 de Novembro de 1512 pelo rei D. Manuel. Implanta-se na praça principal da vila, no caminho que conduzia ao castelo e fronteiro à antiga casa da câmara. |
