Title
6th century Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch
Description
English: 2 parts of an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch which have broken in antiquity. They were found c.10m apart but fit together. The first part is the headplate which has broken just as the bow has started. The headplate is square and only has a top knob remaining. The knob is detachable and only half round with a hollow back. It is held on by a triangular extension down the front of the headplate. On the reverse of the headplate the remains of the pin mechanism can be seen. The headplate measures 25mm by 49mm and weighs 22.7g. The lower part of the brooch is the second piece and consists of the bow and the foot. Some of the catchplate can be seen on the reverse. The bow is curved and is only short. The foot is about 3/4 of the length of this part. There are 2 rounded lappets, one on each side, just below the bow. Then there is a beaded ridge. At the base it expands slightly to a rounded terminal. There is a sub-speherical knop on the end. This part of the brooch measures 97mm by 21.5mm and weighs 35g.
