Summary

[edit]
Description

A battery of two 6" Breech Loading (BL) Mk. VII guns manufactured in 1900 (No. 1230) and 1902 (No. 735) by Elswick Ordnance Company (EOC). The Mk. VII 6" BL was in service as a coastal defence gun until the 1950s. At the start of 1942 there was only one gun situated at Canopus, the second 6" BL being sited on Sappers Hill to the west of Stanley. After a proposal by the Gunnery Officer in the same year, I believe the gun was re-sited from Sappers Hill to Canopus. The Officer also noted that the original Canopus gun was not well sighted and he suggested it be relocated 50yds further up the hill, and that the Command Post and rangefinder were also too low and should be elevated. I am unsure if this work was completed. When new 6" supercharged ammunition was introduced in 1942, these guns had a range of 15,000yds (13.7km).

The guns are locally known as the Canopus Guns on Canopus Hill. This wouldn't originally have been the name of the hill, but is likely named after the arrival of the first gun. Canpous was the name of a class of late C19 battleship, the Canopus Class, and a ship in this class was also named HMS Canopus; which harboured in Stanley on a number of occasions in 1914. The 12pdr guns at Charles Point were offloaded and installed by HMS Canopus in November 1914. The 6in BL guns now on the hill, with their steel naval shields, are likely to have been first installed on Canopus class battleships, giving the name to the hill.
