Les petites ondulations des lignes de courant instantanées ou des tourbillons indiquent leur transition depuis l'état laminaire jusqu'à l'état turbulent.
Les plages de Reynolds données dépendent de la turbulence de l'écoulement. Ce premier régime du cylindre est souvent celui d'objets ou de corps de la vie courante soumis à un vent ordinaire.

Le Cx frontal 0,3 de ce deuxième régime perdure tant que la vitesse de l'écoulement n'est pas trop importante. Si le Reynolds est trop fort, on passe dans le régime hypercritique où le Cx recommence à croitre.
